Why have a Portfolio, well some people need them for professional reasons; job applications, modelling agencies etc, others simply wish to 'freeze a moment in time' and have memories of when they were in their prime (I always use the analogy of TITANIC), we take a light hearted casual approach and the shoots are a lot of fun.

Portfolios, on the other hand are an opportunity to sell your ability to prospective clients, it's not so much about you and your personal likes/dislikes what clothes & makeup you use etc. If employed you'll be told what to wear and the MUA's will be briefed on the look that the client wants. It's your responsibility to 'sell it' to their prospective clients by creating the desire to want or buy whatever you're modelling.

Most would  agree that an outstanding portfolio demonstrates who you can be;
- a variety of environments
- various poses that compliment your body style
- range of annimation or expression
- flexibility in regard to age range - how young, and how old you can look
- different attire and 'wear it well'

When working with models I always ask them to put themselves 'in that space and own it all' clothes, accessories or locations, be comfortable, natural and make it yours, after all the primary role of a model is to be a specific character or actress.

The camera will freeze a point in time and it's my role to bring out the best emotions from the people I work with before releasing the shutter.

So how many photos make a great portfolio, well that depends on what you're going to apply for, 10 -15 is enough to show a good representation of what you can do for a client.

Having say 100+ means you can better taylor applications by picking images most relevant to their specific brief; glamour, costume, fashion, routine, dance, limbs (hands/fingers) portrait, eyes, mouth etc.

Preparation for a photo shoot

I have a lot of pre-shoot preparation, it's my responsibility to work out a shooting plan maintain and clean my equipment; lenses, format memory cards, charge batteries, lighting accessories and a fair bit more.

Models have responsibilities too...

- arrive a little early for final preparations
- try to snack rather than have a large meal earlier and be bloated
- work around your body clock and pick the time when you feel most invigorated and your skin is best
- be well rested - shoots can be repetitive and hard work, arriving tired with bloodshot eyes doesn't help
- shape eyebrows - yes I can do this in post production though please save me the time
- select a wardrobe that's inline with the brief
- pick our a range of accessories to compliment the wardrobe
- start preparations several days prior to the shoot, massage & moisturise face and lips
- makeup - self or MUA
- depending on the shoot try to avoid tan lines
- shave or wax a couple of days ahead, stubble or rashes aren't a good look
- for boudoir or intimate shoots, wear loose clothing and no underwear for several hours beforehand so there are no marks from straps or elastic
